Hiring a Local Guide in Jordan (2026 Guide)
When to hire a guide in Jordan — and when you can confidently explore on your own.
Do You Need a Local Guide in Jordan?
Jordan is one of the easiest countries in the Middle East to explore independently. Many major attractions are well marked and accessible without hiring a guide. However, in certain locations — especially desert regions and cultural neighborhoods — a knowledgeable local guide can significantly improve your experience.
In this guide, we explain when hiring a guide is recommended, what influences pricing, and how to choose the right guide for your trip.
INDEPENDENT TRAVEL SECTION:
Places You Can Visit Without a Guide:
You can confidently explore:
Petra (main trail, see our detailed Petra travel guide)
Jerash Roman ruins (read our Jerash guide)
Dead Sea resorts
Aqaba beaches
Main landmarks in Amman
These areas are safe, well marked, and suitable for independent travel.
WHEN A GUIDE ADDS VALUE:
When Hiring a Guide Is Worth It:
A guide is recommended for:
Wadi Rum desert hikes. (see our Wadi Rum travel guide)
Technical routes like Burdah Bridge. (read our Burdah Bridge hike guide)
Petra (extended).
Remote mountain trails.
Exploring downtown Amman full tour.
In cities like Amman, a local guide can introduce you to traditional markets, family-run shops, historical details, and cultural stories that most tourists would not discover alone.
Types of Guides in Jordan & Official Regulations:
In Jordan, there are different types of licensed guides, and understanding the difference helps you choose the right option for your trip.
1. Licensed Tourist Guides (Full-Day or Multi-Day):
Licensed tourist guides operate under regulations set by the Ministry of Tourism.
The official daily rate for a licensed guide is 90 JOD per day.
If the guide is required to stay overnight during a multi-day tour, an additional 30 JOD per night is typically added.
These guides can accompany you across multiple destinations (for example: Amman → Petra → Wadi Rum → Dead Sea) and provide full-day guiding services.
Important:
Licensed guides are not legally allowed to transport tourists in their own private vehicles.
If transportation between cities is required, travelers must either:
Rent their own car
Or hire a licensed driver separately
Driver costs vary depending on vehicle type and distance. Prices typically start from around 50 JOD per day and increase depending on the route and service.
2. Site Guides (Petra, Jerash & Major Attractions):
At major tourist sites such as Petra and Jerash, official site guides are available at the entrance.
These guides usually offer shorter tours (often around 2–3 hours) focused specifically on that location.
For example:
In Petra, a standard guided tour inside the archaeological site may cost around 50 JOD for approximately 3 hours.
Similar site-specific guides are available in Jerash.
Site guides are generally:
More commercial
Limited to one location
Shorter in duration
Focused only on historical explanations inside that site
They are a good option if you only need guidance inside a specific attraction.
Which Option Is Better?
It depends on your travel style.
If you only want historical explanation inside Petra or Jerash → a site guide is sufficient.
If you want a guide for multiple days, desert experiences, cultural immersion, or customized routes → a licensed tourist guide is more suitable.
Final pricing and arrangements are always agreed directly between the traveler and the guide or driver.
